mwave configuration on IBM TP 600E

Ok. I installed Slackware 8.1 on my thinkpad.

After doing 'insmod mwave', I set up kppp to dial my isp (while logged into root).

Modem is not working!

Did I miss something out?

I have used Slack 8.0 before and had to download the source for the mwave
module, and after setting it up, it worked fine.

But using the module that came with the Kernal in slack 8.1, nothing happens
after a while and I get a message saying something like 'connection scrip
failed'!

Have I missed something out? I noticed there is no mwavem.conf script with
slack 8.1. Is it needed?

Has anyone got their TP modem working with the mwave module supplied with
kernel 2.4.18?

Have you downloaded and installed the user level application from IBM's website? From the kernel documentation:

ACP Modem (Mwave) support
CONFIG_MWAVE
The ACP modem (Mwave) for Linux is a WinModem. It is composed of a
kernel driver and a user level application. Together these components
support direct attachment to public switched telephone networks (PSTNs)
and support selected world wide countries.

This version of the ACP Modem driver supports the IBM Thinkpad 600E,
600, and 770 that include on board ACP modem hardware.

The modem also supports the standard communications port interface
(ttySx) and is compatible with the Hayes AT Command Set.

The user level application needed to use this driver can be found at
the IBM Linux Technology Center (LTC) web site:
