Mutt gmail login failed

When I work at the command line, I often use Mutt to retrieve mail from Google. Yesterday, I am now getting a "Login failed" when I try to connect. I have not changed any local configuration. I recall seeing something from Google about preventing "non secure" applications from connecting. Is there any way to allow Mutt to connect?

You should create an app password to use with mutt.

See, for example: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en

Thank you very much. I've shied away from the two step verification, but I guess according to Google, it has to be turned on to get to adding the app password.

I'm slowely getting out of "no evil" Google crap.
I've got an oauth2 python2 script that I use for now.
No app password needed, no 2 factor authentication.

Forgot to say it was for offlineimap. You have a oauth2 script in contrib to manage IMAP/POP/SMTP. It's python3 BTW.
