If you don't pick on during installation, it will (or use to) default to KDE.

You can make KDE5 look exactly like that with very little effort.

I've spent hours looking at and tweaking different themes and never came close. What is the secret formula?

A transparent panel is a joke. Tried it several times. Never worked.
In kde5 they took out the screensaver, but recently did add a simple screen blanker.
YAWP doesn't work in kde5 and the weather widget is, well.... "drawn with a pencil" as are many of the icons and symbols. The geniuses responsible for the digital clock dropped the leading zeros, for example, when it 1:15 am, the 24 hour clock should read, 01:15. They dropped the zero. Morons!
Cube animation is no longer an option in kde5 and the list goes on........

I believe that choosing the Oxygen Plasma Style will "fix" many of your issues.

Anyhow, try this:
Code:
Settings -> Appearance -> Global Theme -> Breeze Dark
Settings -> Appearance -> Application Style -> Oxygen
Settings -> Appearance -> Plasma Style -> Oxygen
Settings -> Appearance -> Colours -> Breeze Dark
Settings -> Appearance -> Icons -> Oxygen

<EDIT>: The below is not actually necessary if you choose the Oxygen Plasma Style, but you may still want to untick "Background contrast" and reduce the level of "Blur" to suit your taste. </EDIT>

I have it working here. It's not an intuitive process, but not difficult either and it works:
Code:
Settings -> Window Management -> Window Rules -> + Add New
 -> Description (you can put anything here, but I did this): "dock transparency"
 -> Window types -> de-select everything, except for "Dock (panel)"
 -> Apply
 -> + Add Property... -> Appearance & Fixes -> Active opacity
 -> + Add Property... -> Appearance & Fixes -> Inactive opacity
 -> Adjust both sliders to 25%
 -> Apply

Settings -> Workspace Behaviour -> Desktop Effects -> Untick Background contrast

Settings -> Workspace Behaviour -> Desktop Effects -> Tick Blur -> click on config icon & adjust slider to ~40% -> Ok -> Apply

Close settings window
You may need to log out and then log back in.

I'm one of those who prefer lightweight desktops. I tried KDE 4 and 5 briefly when they came out, but they seemed bloated and I gave up. I've been using XFCE for more than 15 years now. I used fluxbox for more than a year before that. I liked the minimality, but even the weakest computers these days can afford some extra resources for a little bit of convenience.

When waiting for 15.0 I refrained from installing Qt5, but I wouldn't have been able to resist much longer if 15.0 hadn't come out. Quite a few bits of software I use regularly switched to Qt5, so it is a necessity for me. Other library versions were also lagging behind in 14.2. One other important feature in 15.0 is the support for Pipewire. I can only make my Bluetooth headphones work properly under Pipewire, so its inclusion in 15.0 saved me from a lot of trouble. IMHO, uninstalling and/or replacing stuff in 15.0 would be a more practical approach than going forward from a previous KDE4 snapshot.

So, in the attached screenshot is Katana 4.22.0 running under Slackware 15.0 on my HP Elite dc7800 USDT computer, which have only Intel graphics capable of OpenGL 1.4

For now, made with a quick and dirty build. After a bit of cleanup on this build, of course I will show it to the fellow Slackers.

Then, Katana can be built (and it works) with Slackware 15.0 while having a surprising little list of supplemental dependencies: libdeflate (for Katie) and MPV.

And believe it or not, there are NO requirements for Akonadi or Baloo.

Many thanks for taking the time to reply. It is appreciated, but I've tried that in the past, and just tried it again, and it is not even close. One of my objections is the solid colored menus without any "character" or "depth" for lack of a better way to explained it. Perhaps, "dimension" is a better word.
Thanks, again.

You got me trying this out. Interesting.
I just need to figure out how to keep the settings between sessions.

I think the graphical settings menu stuff is meant to alter $HOME/.fluxbox/init directly and immediately. It should all be saved between sessions.

lol - like postmodernist art.

The Plasma Style called Smoother5 isn't too bad. I spent hours trying to make it look decent and tried all sorts of styles. Smoother works OK.

There is a project that lets you install KDE4 on Slack15. Haven't tried it yet due to time constraints. Heck I should even be playing around in the forum but needed a break.

Yep, I know about this project. BUT, with all respect for Monsieur Bruno Lafleur, I did not managed yet to understand how to build his KDE4 on Slackware 15.0 without all the bells of PBSLACKS which I guess is a live system.

That's it. I want just KDE4 like a KTown, not the PBSLACKS with KDE4.

Unfortunately, like I said, I did not figured out this yet. Or rather, to understand how his build scripts work.

Actually Monsieur Pierre Brochard. The most interesting project he makes available is Narcisse, I think.
