Actually, after rebuilding the system then installing MPlayer and mplayer codec i am noticing that I have no audio. I can see my router is streaming audio using mplayer but I cannot configure sound. Under applications I tried to open audio mixer but it crashed.
Under multimedia settings on the right pane I can see three items.

Did you run alsaconf first? You have to do that to set up the proper audio driver.
I compiled MPlayer on Slackware 13 over the weekend and had no problems at all, but I got the code directly from their website. All I needed to do was configure --enable-gui; make; make install; ldconfig.
But make sure you extract the codec files to the right place (usr/local/lib/codecs, IIRC - it's in the README file).
When I open one of the files with mplayer it starts buffering but i don't hear anything.

keithE, your solution requires further study. The mplayer i am using is from slackbuild not Slackware's own site.
/usr/local/lib is empty.
If you can provide a walk through I would greatly appreciate it.
Do other programs fail to play sounds, or is it just MPlayer?
Also, you are a member of the audio group, right? You can check by entering "groups" and seeing if "audio" appears in the list. If not, you can add yourself to the audio group with:
Code:
su -c 'gpasswd -a user audio'
Then log out and log back in (this is not optional), and try MPlayer again.
Here is result for dugan's suggestions.

If no device is available, then you probably didn't run alsaconf. Do that (as root) and follow the instructions. It's very easy. Then run alsamixer again just to make sure everything's OK.
If you can provide a walk through I would greatly appreciate it.
I can't do much from here (I'm not at home, where my Slackware box is), but if you get the source file from MPlayer's website, the README file tells you everything you need to know. It's the normal compilation procedure, with the --enable-gui option set in ./configure if you want the GTK interface. I always do an ldconfig after compiling and installing software from source, even though it may or may not be necessary.
Be sure to download the "essential codecs" file. That is what is extracted into /usr/local/lib/codecs (you'll have to create that directory).
I just ran alsaconf and it detected my card said it configured it. I also ran alsamix and readjusted the volume levels. Still not getting any sound.
I am going to consider rebuilding the system this time using the mplayer's official website for the audio drivers. and see what I can learn from the README.
