Mplayer "no sound"

Please help me. I've tried the suggestions I've seen on other post with no sucess. I've tried to compile mplayer 3 times and each time I open mplayer I have no sound. I ran configure with --enable-gui --enable-win32. I've extracted the codecs to /usr/local/lib/win32. I've tried both MPlayer v1.0pre3try2 source and the latest CVS with no sucess. I'm running Slack 9.1. The older version of Mplayer I had worked (v1.0pre3) but I decieded to update b/c of the security flaw. Below is the message I get from when I start mplayer to when it quits. Thanks Adam

Run gmplayer and figure out what audio output plugin your trying to use? Or close whatever is using the sound card before you try to run console mplayer
