As far as file sharing programs go, I use Xnap and am very happy with it. I have used WinMx (when I was naive and had Windoze on my machine), and Lopster but XNap is far superior. It has an autoconnect feature that lets you stay connected to all the servers that are not propietary or private. I usually am connected to 10 or 11 at once. It is written in Java so it is platform independent. (runs on Windoze, Linux, Mac etc).
I bought my daughter a Lycoris Linux computer from WalMart.com
and XNap loaded easily on hers. (it is preloaded with Java) I use Mandake 9.1 Standard, so I had to install Java myself and I'm glad I did.
Xine and MPlayer are both good players. I prefer Xine for DVD since DVD Navigation is useful. Acutally, I've gone Xine for everything since the Codecs I put in /usr/lib/win32 take care of all types of media formats such as avi, wmv, mov, mpg, and others. Install both and try them yourself to see which you like. Choice is good.
I'm not saying that you should not start with Slackware, but it's a little hard to learn. If you've got mandrake 9.1 instead you should get already mplayer on it's package. If you have got Redhat 9.0, you should have really nice skins and pretty new versions of gaim, which looks NICE + plenty of good tools to help you installing programs...
Slack rocks, but as a first shot, without ever have compiled a program, you will have really hard moments there .
Mplayer and Xine are usually crippled in commercial versions. But Megaman X has a very good point. GUI tools can help with learning how the configuration files work, as a crutch. But crutches are meant to be laid by when the leg is healed. Slack will be here when people are ready to walk.

All you should need is mplayer and run kazaa lite under wine.
