Moving files

Well, I finally got my slack box online, and using samba through xfce, I can read my
windows workgroups and even the directories and individual files in them , that I
would like to move over.

However; I cannot move them at all. Any individual file just get copied to a text
document with the location.

How cam I move the files over...and in windows how can I see the slack box?

Can you tell us how you are trying to move the files over at present, please. Typically, it would be a command like mv or cp, but it would be hard to say what is going wrong unless you can say what you are doing which produces the error.

I find the most reliable way is to actually mount the Windows share ie
Code:
mount -t smbfs -o username=win_user,password=win_pass //win_machine/share /mnt/hd
then copy/move/manipulate files as though it were my local filesystem.

To set Linux up for samba shares you need to edit the /etc/samba/smb.conf file, it is pretty well documented so you should have no trouble understanding whats required, then fire up the samba daemon
Code:
# chmod 755 /etc/rc.d/rc.samba
# /etc/rc.d/rc.samba start

Actually, I got it done by going through X.

However; is there a way to view/access/play the files on the Slack Box, through the Windows
one.

In other words, can I see the linux machine, on the windows one?

you must configure your share in the smb.conf file and add a workgroup and a netbios name to your share. If you do this start the 2 daemon (ntpd and smbd) your windows box should be abble to see your linux box without anyproblem. Dont forget to set the right permissions to your shared folder and dont forget to enable "user can write in this directory" in your windows shared folder properties (right click - properties) .... but even hating when someone says RTFM to me I think this could be the solution for you... like was said, samba is very well documented, please give a try to the manual.....

that is why Samba (SMB, Server Message Block protocol) was made for, so you can share directories and printers between Unix and windoze systems
