mercury Optical scroll mouse problems in Slackware 10.2

Hi, im having difficulty finding information on getting my Mercury PS2 5 button optical scroll mouse to work with slackware 10.2.

any help would be greatfully recieved

are you trying to get it to work in console or in X windows?
what configurations have you already tried
do you get any movement/functionality?

I'm trying to use the scroll feature of the mouse in KDE. im using the default configuration, i have standard use out of the mouse as though it was a standard 2 button mouse.
