If you're referring to the mass-rebuild in current, then no, it's not "necessary", but as it's been so long since 14.2 I think Pat wants to make sure everything is "fresh" for the 15.0 release.
I'll be rebuilding all my local slackbuilds too for the same reason.

I see gpg error while updating gpg:

!!! F A T A L !!!
Slackware repository does NOT contain the Official GPG-KEY
You SHOULD disable GPG Strict check 'STRICTGPG=off'
in /etc/slackpkg/slackpkgplus.conf

I never thought of that, GazL...great idea! I guess I know what I'm doing today.
Thanks!

Just don't delete your old packages until you know the rebuilds work.
In fairness it's more OCD than anything useful, but it means that everything will be referring to all the latest library symbols which could potentially avoid a future breakage.
I usually do a fresh install on release day, though again not necessary, it gives the system a spring clean and you get a free filesystem defrag into the bargain. 5 years following current is bound to result in some trash being left behind, no matter how fastidious one is.
ChangeLog sez bind-9.16.11-x86_64-2.txz elfutils-0.183-x86_64-2.txz enscript-1.6.6-x86_64-4.txz font-sony-misc-1.0.3-noarch-5.txz font-sony-misc-1.0.3-noarch-5.txz libffi-3.3-x86_64-3.txz libx86-1.1-x86_64-5.txz tree-1.8.0-x86_64-3.txz but I didn't find them: it is just me?
Later: The mirror I used, osusl, was behind on these packages.

Reason: new information
I had some issues connecting to http://slakfinder.org
but it works now. I guess my default firefox settings are too restricted (require https instead of http).
