Kmail not storing a/c passwd

Greetings

On a newly installed Slackware 10.2 system using KDE and kmail, every time I open Kmail it is requesting the account password, even though in the settings I have it storing my password. As a work around I have used the kwallet system, but even so, one still needs to enter a password. This is unsatisfactory and doesn't happen on my other system running the identical setup.
Has anyone else encountered this problem and what does one do to fix it?

Thanks in anticipation
