I have installed Ubuntu as an application in XP.
So when I run XP, it shows Folder named Ubuntu.
I was looking for grub.cfg file but cannot find it when I run XP.
Hey, I'm not going to be much help to you in this case since I'm not familiar with that method of installation. You might have better luck in the ubuntu section of the forums or on the official ubuntu forums.
Thank you mostlyharmless.
I went into grub shell prompt but it only allows command like "cp" to view grub.cfg, what is the command for file editor.
Thank you for your patience.
Hello Guys,
i have a system with Linux on it.
i'm a complete ignorant about Linux (don't know what distro it is)
the system got over voltage but luckily
it's still booting but with error compared to other
systems which were fried.
But here the problem once i'm starting it i'm geting
the following error:
VFS: cannot open root device “301” or 03:01
Please append a correct “root=” boot option
Kernel panic: vfs: unable to mount root fs on 03:01
Spurious 8259A interrupt: IRQ7.
i went and boot it from UBCD 503 searched for the lilo.cfg
and this is how it looks :
prompt
timeout=50
default=linn
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
#message=/boot/message
linear
password=aap
restricted
that was it looked in the boot directory
found out the vlinuz has an icon like a shortcut on windows
there are many vlinuz files with diffrent numbers
like vlinuz-2.4.18 & vlinuz-2.4.18-3 & vlinuz-2.4.22 (all unknown)
except for this file which is vmlinux-2.4.18-3 (executable)
Any help will be appreciated
many thanks in advance.
1) You resurrected a very old thread (the last post was from Nov 25th 2005!); it is impractical for various reasons, I'll not elaborate on that, but you'd better created a new thread. (unanswered posts do happen to get a wee bit more attention)
2) This is the Slackware forums. You'll find many expedrts here, but they may or may not be too versed about the Ubuntu way of things.
When the kernel reports that it cannot mount the root fs there are a few reasons:
- Your boot loader is not configured correctly. Since you report Ubuntu, I assume it's Grub.
- You report that Ubuntu is installed as an application in XP; You mean with a program like Virtual Box, VM Ware player or so? The drivers for your disks may not be in grub yet (that's one reson why I would never want to run Grub)
- Your kernel does either not have the drivers for the disk or is missing the drivers for the filesystem. You'll need to know what filesystem type you have installed on your root fs (/)
Reiserfs is reportedly a fast fs, but also one prone to filesystem corruption. I'd advise to not use i5 and instead stick to proven filesystems.
