I run Slack 7.0 with kernel 2.2.13 and recently upgraded to 2.2.16.
A bit after that I tried to install 2.5.9 but during the "make" it fails, same with "make install".
Is it possible to go from 2.2.16 to 2.5.9?
I followed the exact intructions from the thread about kernel upgrading but it wouldnt work.
Can someone please tell me, if possible exactly, how to upgrade from 2.2.13 or .16 to 2.5.9? Or if it's even possible.
You should be able to do that without too many problems. You might need to build a new version of the modtools, and possibly a few other things. What process are you going through to build the kernel? Is there a specific reason you are using the development kernel not the stable 2.4 tree?
I followed the instructions on " Kernel compiling guide for newbies..." in this forum both times and the first time it went all perfect, but when i tried the 2.5.9 kernel it went wrong.
I want to try the develompment kernel out for the extended HW support and built in ALSA modules. I havn't had any luck on getting my soundcard to work with my "new" mainboard.
Another question, what is modtools?
I'm pretty much a n00b on this.
I've used slack 7 on my old laptop without problems though but never botherd with "advanced" stuff.
You might want to follow the Kernel-HOWTO available from http://www.tldp.org. I've recently built the latest 2.5 release, it built fine just by untaring the source, doing a make mrproper && make menuconfig && make bzlilo && make modules && make modules_install however I need to build a new version of the modutils by the looks of it as my current version of modprobe can't find any modules.
