Unhappy Installed Slackware 10.2 - have some problems

Just finished installing Slackware 10.2.

I would like to set up the package manager in order to download and install any updates, as well as the firewall.

I found the package manager, have no clue how to configure it (server address, etc.) and do not know where the firewall settings are located.

If setting this up is going to be more trouble than it's worth, I would be better off using another distribution. I gave up on SuSE.

Thanks for any assistance.

I use slackpkg:

The blacklist and mirror files are in /etc/slackpkg/

You need to uncomment one of the mirrors to use (delete the preceding #)
Then if you want to not update anything add the package name to the blacklist file. Some packages are already in there such as aaa-elflibs, aaa_base etc. Leave them.

Type:

slackpkg update

Then do either of

slackpkg upgrade packagename
slackpkg upgrade-all
slackpkg (re)install packagename
slackpkg upgrade slackware

If all this has to be done via a command line, I'm not going to bother, it's too much of a waste of time.

I had enough problems with it NOT detecting the printer that was connected to the computer it was installed to, but it had no problem finding a printer connected to another computer on my home network (which in my opinion, it should NOT have done).

Thanks anyway.

If you're expecting automagical GUI configuration tools - you've picked the wrong distribution.

Slackware expects you to think a fair amount, and do a lot of configuration yourself by editing text files - firewalls, updating, general system configuration, etc you are expected to set up and deal with yourself (with updating, there are third party tools, such as slackpkg, swaret, slapt-get et al but these are not perfect and do require user intervention).

I think it's faster when you know how to do it(it takes a half an hour to figure it out and to do your first install, upgrade or wahtever). I was a Fedora user and I'm starting to like Slack everyday more and more.

hi edward !. You can also use slapt-get for installing /updating ur system. It also has a gui interface called as slapt-gui. Good luck with it. Slapt-get Config. files are stored in /etc/slapt-get . Happy hunting
