I have had a Samsung ML-2010P (mono laser) that has never worked in Linux, although I recently tested it on a windows (works fine). When I purchased it I mistakenly assumed that - being a laser printer - it would understand HPGL and PS. Instead it speaks some sort of third party language not understood by my Slackware box. I tried thismorning to install the "samsung-unified-driver" for Linux. The installation was a success but the driver is not apparently as universal as one might think. So still no printer.

I was recently looking at HP laser printers and learned the model I could afford spoke that same third-party language or something similar. I cannot imagine a "Hewlitt Packard" printer not understanding "Hewltt Packard Graphic Language" or even PostScript. Even my 9 pin dot matrix printer in the very early '90s understood PS.


Do the newer low end HP laser printers work in linux ?

If they work in the GUI, will they work without GUI on a terminal (tty) ?

What models if any still speak HPGL and/or PS ?

As a last effort to make the Samsung work: Can I somehow alias the model 2010 to a 2050 (or something the driver will support) ? Perhaps some other sort of work around or even creative editing of the binaries ?

Have you tried splix? I found the info on the Arch wiki for printers under the Samsung section (it does say it is for just the ML-2010, but it seems like the letters after tend to not mean much with the drivers).

When I first bought the printer Splix was the only viable option. It was absolutely useless.

Seems like splix is the only option.[1] It also looks like some folks had perfect success and others...not. Are you using a front-end like CUPS or cli?

I had given up on Samsung entirely. In a live chat yesterday with the Samsung help desk, I enquired about Linux support for their printers and was told there was't any. I got little response but a brief apology (with no explanation) when I gave _him_ the link for the file: "samsung-unified-driver.gz" from a Samsung download site. I was not at all impressed.

I just tried the splix driver with cups and no joy. Just the same four line message, beginning with the line "INTERNAL ERROR - Please use the proper driver."

From what source did you acquire the driver? Did you build it or was it a binary?

Could you post the last instance of the full error log from /var/log/cups/error_log?

I'm afraid I found an old slackware package and took the easy route. Ashamed of myself, I will recompile and try it again.

Now it works.

Many thanks for the direction, in the end recompiling the latest (and not very recent) splix source (again) without Jbig did the trick.

I really had had it with Samsung after my call to the help desk but I suppose I gave up too soon.

It really isn't a bad little machine. It has been virtually unused since the original purchase except for the occasional test page. The toner hasn't caked up or otherwise become unuseable and none mars the roller.

Great! It may help others in the future to mark the thread "solved."

Well, looks like you figured it out (or a mod marked it), since its now marked.

In case you didn't do it, here's how:

- Login and access your thread (only you and I suppose the mods can mark as solved);
- On the bar just below the "Post Reply" button, there is a drop-down labeled "Thread Tools";
- Choose "Mark this thread as solved."

There is also a short-cut link just above the "Thread Tools" drop-down.

Not that hard to find after a little rest.
