How to find out which package needed for a particular file?

Hello

What is the best general method to find out which package a particular file is in?

My current specific problem is that I have neither /bin/ping or /usr/local/Trolltech/Qt-4.3.0/bin/qmake.

Best

Charles

This command is very useful if you want to find out which *installed* package contains particular file:

Code:
$cd /var/log/packages
$grep -lir 'filename' *

Thanks both Such simple but effective techniques (once you know them!) -- ones to keep in the "toolbox".
