hi, would someone be so kind to tell me how exactly should I set up an ftp server on slackware current.
i tryed with proftpd, i configured all the stuff, i hope corectly, i added an user, and when i try to login with the user, it sais:
root@localhost:/home# ftp 41.255.43.177
Connected to 41.255.43.177.
220 ProFTPD 1.2.10 Server (Randy Rhoads Server) [41.255.43.177]
Name (41.255.43.177:root): randyr
331 Password required for randyr.
Password:
530 Login incorrect.
Login failed.
Remote system type is UNIX.
Using binary mode to transfer files.
ftp> .
Hehe, the solution is probably easier than you think,
Verify the following two:
Is your document-root set to an existing directory ?
Does the user who logs in have access to that directory ?
I've had this problem a while ago I just tested it again, if the user does not have access to the default directory where enters trough ftp he will see the error you stated above.
i am having the same problem with proftpd. i got annonymous to work, without password protection, and i'd like to get it to require a password. Yes, i know, add "AnonRequirePassword on" I did that, and if I ftp 127.0.0.1 i can still login as ftp without typing anything in the password field. Also, I cannot login as anything BUT user:ftp. All of this applies with the latest proftpd.conf modification:
<Anonymous ~>
User soulseek
Group ftp
AnonRequirePassword on
I have put in proftpd.conf "User ftp" and still the same. Anything I've read seems to assume the reader is extensively familiar with ftp servers and doesn't elaborate at all on, for instance, what the "User" directive is or does.
Also, i have tested the soulseek user in console logins. user soulseek can read the home directory, my Mp3s directory. I just changed owner:group to soulseek:ftp to match the user, and the login still failed. I do have md5.o.gz on my system, slackware 10.0.
What do I have to do? Does proftp require a non-annonymous server to be defined in proftpd.conf before an actual password authenticated login will be permited?
