So now I have a much smaller kernel, and I definately selected only the few sound cards that could be mine in the menuconfig.

Still no sound device.

Anyone know about this?

I'm guessing I need to disable ALSA and enable OSS?

Alsa currently starts and gives the same error as before.

Figured it out for myself, I was missing /dev and automount in filesystems.
