1. Yes
2. Yes
3. You first need to resize your XP partition, so that you will have a place to install Slack into. My recommendation would be to first defrag XP, then repartition it using whatever tool you are most comfortable with. As for me, I recommend BootIt NG, from terabtye, which you can find here: http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/bootitng.html
4. Basically yes, but you need to create the partition first.
Standard comment: be sure to backup any important data first before you start messing with partitions. -- J.W.
This is what I would do...as stated before, resize the Win partition, or re-install Windows to a smaller partition leaving the second partition unformated for the Slack install.
During the Slack install, choose to install Lilo to the root partition. Create a boot floppy for later.
After the Slack install, either boot from the floppy, or boot the cd with the following option (at the boot: screen)...
bare.i root=hda2 noinitrd ro
It will look like this...
boot:bare.i root=hda2 noinitrd ro
Once the system is booted, login as root and do the following...
insert a blank floppy...then do...
mkfs -t msdos /dev/fd0
Then do...
dd if=/dev/hda2 of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
Then do...
mcopy /bootsect.lnx a:
reboot into Windows, then copy the bootsect.lnx file from the floppy to C:\
Right click on "My Computer", click Properties, click the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery, click Edit, add the following on a seperate line...
C:\BOOTSECT.LNX="Slackware"
Save the file, reboot, then choose either Windows or Slackware. Anytime you recompile the kernel, or change Lilo, you'll need to follow the process again. HTH.
Ok... I did the complete oposite when I had installed Slackware. I installed Lilo initially on the MBR. I tried a recovery for W2K_AS and was unsuccessful in removing LILO.
In any case, is there a way I could edit lilo.conf to reflect that I do have another system on another partition and select to boot either one from LILO at boot?
Is it necessay to have 3 partitions for slack? 1 for boot 2nd for swap and a 3rd for root; if doing a dual boot?
