dont get it .... xf86config not working ..

Hi. I've been using Slack 8.1 for a month or so and messed a few config files up without having backups of them so I decided to reinstall slack on my HDD. Anyways the install goes smoothly and I get to the login .. log in as root ..etc. adduser (myself) exit and then relogin as myself (new user) and type > '/usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config' and go thru the text config. I have an NEC Multisync 95 monitor and NVIDIA 32 Mb vid card. I got all my vertical horizontal syncs and have entered the 32768 in the memory part but X refuses to start after config. I had X working fine before but now I can't seem to get it working. It just launches into a total black screen and 30 seconds later says >
fatal error:
0 screens found: screen(s) found but do not have usable configuration

or something similiar ...

I would guess this pertains to my config not being right ..
It also said something about VESA and I think it said it wasn't found or not able to be used ... can't remember off hand ..

I have previously had X running after two previous installs of slack 8.1 on the same machine in same setup. Can't understand why it isn't working ..

any help appreciated ...
I gotta get back to Linux so I can continue learning C progamming

thanks

Have you tried doing the setup for X as root instead of a user?

Also, I know it works for most the ATI AGP cards, but there is a default VESA config in the /etc/X11 directory. I think it is called XF86Config-vesa. Just copy it to the XF86Config file, using 'cp XF86Config-vesa XF86Config'. Then attempt to startx. It might not be the fastest driver, but it appeared to work very well when I have used it.

BTW: Once you get it working, most of the config files under /etc that you really need can be saved on a single floppy disk. All of the /etc directory is probably under 10 MByte, fits easily on a Zip disk or LS120 or something.

Ya you have to be root to save things under /etc
Try as root again, it should work then
