"Could not start dbus. Can you call qdbus?"


I can't log in to my regular user with KDE. I can log in as root. After I enter my password and the log in continues, a small windows opens and says "Could not start D-bus. Can you call qdbus?" I'm using 14.2 64bit.

I'm not sure what exactly I changed when I last logged in a couple of days ago. I did install Miniconda the last time I logged in. I had no issues with KDE at that point.

I searched for some possible solutions. One asked what's in /usr/bin/startkde:

I'm not sure what information is necessary to diagnose and fix this problem.

It looks like it's failing out on this bit of your 'startkde' script:

So first see if you actually have qdbus and whether its working by calling 'qdbus' from a tty login console. It'll complain about not finding a session dbus if run while logged in at the tty console, but at least you'll know if its there and working. You could also check where it is with 'which qdbus'. If there's an issue with qdbus then you could try reinstalling the qt4 package, which is where it comes from.

The other thing that could be happening is the first part of that code with 'dbus-launch' is not getting executed. You could check if dbus-launch is present and working as well (dbus-launch comes from the dbus package if you need to reinstall it).

Also make sure that DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS is not getting set in any user profile scripts. It shouldn't be but it wouldn't hurt to check. A quick way to test that idea would be make a new user without any modifications and see if you can start a kde session.

That's all I can guess from looking at your results from that 'startkde' script. I'm only running slackware64-current at the moment so I cant poke around with 'startkde'; it has been replaced with 'startplasma-x11' in current.
