root@slackware~$ mount /mnt/cdrom
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom,
or too many mounted file systems
(could this be the IDE device where you in fact use
ide-scsi so that sr0 or sda or so is needed?)
Put your CD in the CD-ROM tray. Close CD-ROM tray.

[enter your root password here]
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
[system should say something like: filesystem mounted read-only]
ls /mnt/cdrom
If the above does not work:
mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom
That's all I can think of, off the top of my head... Hope it helps!
snocked@slackware~$ su

root@slackware/home/snocked$ mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom,
or too many mounted file systems
(could this be the IDE device where you in fact use
ide-scsi so that sr0 or sda or so is needed?)
root@slackware/home/snocked$ mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom
mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
I do have hdc=ide-scsi in lilo, but that should only affect burning.
I'm afraid that's not quite true. It will affect the device system wide, so your cdrom is /dev/sr0 not /dev/hdc.
Since /dev/cdrom is pointing at /dev/hdc, you need to change the sym link or change /etc/fstab.
link was changed:
root@slackware/dev$ ls -l cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Jul 29 09:21 cdrom -> /dev/sr0
but ??
root@slackware~$ ls /dev/cdrom
/dev/cdrom@
root@slackware~$ ls /dev/sr0
/dev/sr0@
root@slackware~$ mount /dev/cdrom
mount: Too many levels of symbolic links
root@slackware~$ ls -l /dev/sr0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jul 29 09:12 /dev/sr0 -> /dev/cdrom
root@slackware~$ mount /dev/sr0
mount: can't find /dev/sr0 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
You may have to re-generate your devices. Do you have the /dev/MAKEDEV script? If so, run that to create the devices again and point /dev/cdrom correctly when finished.
root@slackware~$ cdrecord -scanbus
Cdrecord 2.0 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 Jörg Schilling
cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open '/dev/pg*'. Cannot open SCSI driver.
cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make sure you are root.
cdrecord: For possible transport specifiers try 'cdrecord dev=help'.
