Brand New Slacker

I just climbed up a wrung on the linux ladder. I installed Slack 9 over my old RH9, and did all the partitioning stuff with a fair amount of confidence. I was just curious about a few things. Someone want to explain to me what the heck that default file system is? Also.. Gnome/Kde?

Slack seems to have a steeper learning curve.. yep. I'tll be good though, as I'll be forced to learn more.

Slackware is so cool it makes me crap my pants.

How did they fit so much coolness on one cd? Redhat was cool, but not as cool.. and that was 3 CD's! It makes me sick, thinking about how much I love Linux. I mean, I really do. If I had a wife, I'd want her to be like linux.. i'd call her tux, instead of honey. it's much more endearing, don't you think?

I love penguins, don't you?

Hehe! I'm a slacker now!
/end giddy excitement

Do you have a question somewhere in ther?

Don't use a linux distro because its "cool" or "l33t", you will only end up knowledgless and not cool.

Use a distro because its right for you.

Use whatever window manager fits you... Gnome... KDE... whatever. Try them all by switching between them using the

xwmconfig

command.

Something else worth trying (since you enjoying steep learning curves): fluxbox (sorta like blackbox, only it's flux... ). Findable at http://www.fluxbox.org/

P.S.: and listen to contrasutra... he's a smart-ass (and I mean that in the best possible way)

slackware defaults to ext3 or reiserfs, can't remember
1) you are way to excited, slack is what I learned on and the only one I use even after 4-5 years. but you are obsessed

2) less /etc/fstab that will tell you what file systems you are using.

3) if you mean linux startup-scriopt flavor it is called bsd-style

4) it is cool and makes redhat look like week old barf a mac user lef t behind.

5) I recommend using enlightenment, unfortunetly it is removed in slack 9, if you want to learn some stuff about compiling and installing in slack d-load it at www.enlightenment.org (get 16.5 not 17) I will personally help you if you encounter problems.

Am I detecting a hint of anti-Mac sentiments here???

LOL I do nto mean mac users in general, I meant the kind that would handcuff themselves to the mac plant to keep it from being torn down, or the kind that spend all day talkign about how great macs are without ever doign anything else on them. and also those that have no life other than preaching mac. I ahve a friend (macmonk on aol messenger if you want to bug him) who is all that compressed in one.

Hehehehehe

I have a friend EXACTLY like that... he's prone to fainting whenever Apple comes out with something new (e.g. emailed me the entire day when Apple announced their exciting new G5 computer).

You get a choice when installing Slack what filesystem you want to use - ext3 is a typical choice - there are others.

GNOME and KDE are Desktop environments - essentially they combine a Window Manager and a host of "high level" GUI tools.

For information on the various Window Managers:

I picked reiserfs.. it was default, so I went with it. Can I get a little more info on it? I was really happy to see all of my options. Kernels.. Windows Managers.. It really was interesting. I suppose I'll have to educate myself as to what they actually are, so I don't feel so damn clueless when I'm installing.
