Question Boot Problems

Hello everyone,

Cheers to my first post

Ok, I attempted to install Slack 9 about 3 times and the 3rd time I finnaly did everything without a mistake. I kept on forgetting to put both of my partions, linux and winxp on lilo to load .

So everything went ok untill I choose Linux to load at lilo and everything seemed to be working fine untill the buffer stops rolling and the pc freezes at this point with the following messages..

ISAPNP: Scanning for PnP Cards
ISAPNP: No Plug & Play device found
Intel PCIC probe: Not found
Databook TCIC-2 PCMCIA probe: Not found
ds: no socket drivers loaded!
Cardmrg[53]: No PCMCIA driver in /proc/devices
Intel 810 + AC97 Audio, version 0.21, 15:37:49 Mar 11 2003
i810: NViDiA nForce Audio found at IO 0xe000 and 0xdc00, IRQ 11
i810_audio: Audio Controller supports 6 channels
ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: 0x4144:0x5360 (Analog Devices AD1885)
i810_audio: AC'97 codec 0 unable tp map surround DAC's (or DAC's not present), total channels = 2
ac97_codec: secondary ac97 codec not present
i810_audio: timed out waiting for codec 1 analog ready.

After that last line it freezes and the only thing I can do is shutdown the machine by pressing the power button on the cpu.. I can't even do a ctrl+alt+del.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks!

hmm...

Looks like you have the nforce chipset. Which motherboard? I'm looking around for some options to pass the kernel to keep it from trying to load any modules for your onboard audio. Hang on...

Which MoBo? I can't remember how slack's kernel is loaded. I don't think you had to compile it, did you?
This sounds like a kernel problem to me. I'm googling around to see what I can find. If you're using an Asus or Abit MoBo you might want to check their forums too. they have Linux sections....

Crush MSI nForce420 Motherboard (Millennia® XP+), thats my MSI board. I heard that if I comment out the line (alias sound-slot-1 i810_audio) in (/etc/modules.conf) I can boot with no problem but I'll get no sound. The thing is.. how do I edit (Slack uses)rc.modules If i can't get into the system?

This is a job for TOMSRTBT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://www.toms.net/rb/

A beautiful tool that no-one should be without!

When you get in, go to /mnt,
mkdir exampledir
mount /dev/hdX exampledir (hdX is your root partition)
cd exampledir/etc/

<then I think vi is all you have. Brush up on vi and edit that file!>

That's what I'd do.......

I didn't quite get to run tomrb program.. I tried installing some other linux distro with no success :/. So today I came home from the gym and turned on my machine. Accidently I choose Linux at Lilo prompt.. and what I least expected had happen.. Slackware made it through with the booting process. Now I need to go read and try to configure my machine

Thanks for your assistance JE_FRO.
