So let me get this straight. There is a known bug in Slackware 10 that freezes the mouse for short periods of time that is caused because of poor file permissions? I want to know if anyone else has had this problem due to another reason. I've had this problem and I did what was suggested by Franklin and I will confirm if it solved my problem with a follow up reply later.

I am not of the opinion that this is a Slackware bug.

My feeling is that with 2.4.26 (maybe 2.4.27) kernels, if the main cdrom drive is designated sr0 or sr1 due to using ide-scsi, then the KDE audio cd browser function in the konqueror file manager side panel has a problem with the permissions of the character device /dev/sgX where X=1 or 0 depending on the setup.

This is NOT a slackware issue. This MAY be a KDE 3.2.X issue.

I do not use KDE 3.3.X nor do I use 2.6.X kernels, so I cannot speak with any authority on those scenarios. It may not be an issue in 2.6 kernels due to the change in /dev and ide-scsi.

My 2 cents.

Well I know that its a common issue cause I checked the error messages as I have my Slackware setup in the same format and it was also scanning for CD Drives constantly and freezing at the end of the search. I did what you said and it fixed it. It seems this is a common issue so I think it may mean writing this as a help file or something where people can get to the solution easier. Also I must give a huge thanks to Franklin for solving this issue and being a big help

Glad I could help

I'm honestly don't know how how prevalent this issue may be as I never bothered to google it - wasn't sure how to describe it - and just fixed it on my own. I haven't seen many questions regarding it in the forums and almost didn't reply here because the OP thought he had an ATI problem. Perhaps a moderator could rename the thread so it would be more easily found - that may be enough. Something like "random KDE freezes using ide-scsi solved" or whatever. I leave it up to whoever has the power and/or motivation

Again, glad I could help.

I just installed new slackware 10.1 .

There is the 2.4.29 kernel and kde 3.3.2 .

After a fresh install the freeze still happens.

I understood that it's possible to solve this problem easily without changing
device permissions.
Just set the right cdrom device path into the kde control center (Sound&Multimedia->Audio CD).
(Do not select "determine device automatically" !)

This is an issue with both ide-scsi (for cd burners) and device permissions.

Set permissions and ownership as follows:

Code:
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 8 2005-02-21 08:02 cdrom -> /dev/sr0
brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 11, 0 1999-04-13 00:24 sr0
crw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 21, 0 1999-04-13 00:24 sg0
Then add yourself (and others if needed) to the cdrom group.
This will solve the freezing, the KsCD issue, and the eject CD problem.

sr0 and sg0 are in the root group and have no group permissions by default (600)
which makes it difficult to do anything with the cdrom as a normal user.

If you have one cdrom that is not using scsi emulation, then setting the default device in
the control center to that device will work to eliminate the freezing because kde can find
a cdrom that is not using scsi emulation.

what do you mean for eject cd problem?

I use scsi emulation but i get kde not to freeze only setting
the right path to the cd on the control panel of kde.

I have cdrom -> hdc and sg0 owned by root:root with rw only for owner.
sr0 is like your.

I doesn' t freeze.
