This is the line that was causing it to fail for me in pam_env.conf:

XDG_CONFIG_HOME @{HOME}

I had set that because I use fish shell, and it gets confused on remote login without that. Evidently, the line isn't being ignored despite what it said in the logs.

Yes, I did a 'slackpkg --upgrade-all' and accepted all the packages without looking at anything else, and among them, there was a new kernel. I suppose that was my mistake, I trusted too much that it would update everything without issues .

I've restored a snapshot of the VM before the disaster and I've updated only applications, and everything went smoothly. Later, I'll try to update the kernel.

PS= It works without problems with the new version 3.2.3.
