i'm really new to setting up internet access on my linux box running slack. i have comcast as a high speed connection and also a linksys router that connects with cable modem. i intend to connect a wire from the router to the slack box with an ethernet port. what are the steps i need to follow to get the linux box configured for access

thanks in advance

Well depending on if your issuing out static IP's or DHCP from the router configurations, all you really have to do is if your NIC is supported, just simply run netconfig to configure your network in Slackware and it should prompt for all the info, if you select DHCP it will just be like in Windows, get the info from the router, etc.

Then in most cases you just need to add your ISP's DNS entries to /etc/resolv.conf and your all set and done.

Shouldn't really have any problems, if you do just post them. I currently have a Linksys Wireless router with 8 port switch, 10 total computers behind them... 8 in which are running Slackware.
