Hi people !

I feel like king of the hill, and my computer can´t even play a sound or dvd and the winmodem...a mystery to be revealed.
I have made about 8 unsuccefull installs since someone lend me slack 9.0 4disc set yesterday (i even got notes) but this time i got it right and I have some things to say :

- I had, for the first time, to install lilo manually (which i found it very educative but annoying too).
Question : why LILO doesn´t get it right all by itself as their previous "brothers" anymore ?

- Hotplug ??? ( i had to doubt peter on this one ) until i figure out and said NO to that little extra, everything went smooth.
Question : why does this particular software hangs the booting process ?

(I don´t really want to know, believe me, i have enough to worry about)

Slackware 9.0 looks OK but... nothing is working and i feel like am just wasting time while i could learn some things i have been wanting to, and most of all is that i can get a 3 years old mandrake to make my sound card work, its really killing me, that's the bitterness some folks feel about slackware, i guess.

Last but not least:

I really wanted to ask ( cause i happen to own a very recent laptop NX9010 hp compaq and only redhat 10 digs this mother) if you think it is worth while to update 2.4.8 kernel to the last stable 2.6.5 kernel in order to get things working . If yes how can i do this or where to find information on this subject .

I've one nx9010 working perfectly well with slackware, but you need some time to properly set up everything.

Here are some tips that possibly avoid you wasting a lot of time.

1) never tried kernel 2.6.5, but I've tested 2.6.3 and 2.6.4 and they give problems with the sound card. (cpu overload). So I'd suggest you install 2.6.2 kernel perfecty working on this laptop.

2) I understand you already disabled hotplug features while installing and that avoided you problems with 1394 OHCI driver. You can enable hotplug after 2.6.2.compilation/installation that support 1394 OHCI.

3)Slack 9.0 requires some extra installations. Basically you need to install module_init_tools to get it ready to 2.6 kernel series installation.
Move, if possible, to 9.1 that is fully ready for 2.6 kernels.

4) XFree86 4.3.0 does not support Radeon IGP 340, vesa driver is too generic and slow to enable DVD viewing and minimal graphic performances.
New 4.4.0 has new drivers for your IGP 340 working perfectly well.

5) Lilo can be installed automatically if you choose this option. If you have already installed an operating system and you won't modify your MBR the Lilo installation on floppy could be a good choice.

6) Kernel 2.6.2 if properly configured enable your sound to work perfectly well.(alsa)

7) modem (conexant) works very well with Linuxant drivers. You can download those drivers for free at linuxant site. The free version enable only limited features (14 K).
You can get full features at a reasonable cost. (less than 20 $).

If you "still"are interested to install Slackware I can post my 2.6.2 .config file.

BTW (i promise not to take your time much longer) Why does it take such a long time for slack (or any other distro for that matter) to load? My Slackware install was supposed to be on a linux native partition, but during booting i think i saw something like this partition was not 100% linux native .

I don't know what could be such "warning".
