Inspiron laptop, kernel recompiled -> cannot boot x

Edit: Worked this one out. Ran out of hard disk space! So x couldn't boot. aha.

Well,

I recently purchased a dell inspiron 5100 and followed a few guides at linux-laptop.net for the model #. Basically i wanted ACPI support, so, I updated the kernel from rh9 default install, to 2.4.20-19. Then, I fetched all the .patches and various patch type files, and everything went swell.

However, after recompiling, make bzimage make dep blah, i shutdown the machine (shutdown -r now) and after grub loads rh, the system boots its usual procedure but the graphical login X, can't start. It just crashes and crashes over over.

I tried running the rh rescue to check the grub.conf and the /etc/sysconfig/X11/X86Config files and all seemed alright.

Rh9.0
2.4.20-19
acpi support
dell inspiron 5100
+ frustrated

Thanks in advance,
Matt

Hi there

Try going to terminal and change a entry in /etc/inittab, id:5:initdefault: change the number 5 to a 3 so that u will able to boot with a text mode (terminal login). Once this has been done login as root and try running redhat-config-xfree86 to setup VGA cards, monitors, etc. Once that is done try running startx to run X. If all goes well change the /etc/inittab file back to the way it was.

Hope this works for u

Cheers
