Well if ATI would write drivers for specific cards and the software to go with it like they do for windows. We would already have video desktop. I'm not for sure but doen't nvidia have this problem too?

I had a background once that showed a map of the world and whether it was day or night that continually updated. think this was in kde, i use gnome now and a different distro so I'm unable to find it.

I don't know the details on how that worked and i don't know if is in real time, since it take nearly 30 minutes to detect a noticable change on the world map anyhow. but I'm hoping that this is a step in the right direction for you.

I have an ATI All-in-Wonder and the tuners aren't supported by xorg. The gatos project says they have tuner support merged into xorg 7.0 cvs. now i need to figure out how to backport the ati drivers....

I doubt that video drivers from ATI or Nvidia are related, as even the generic drivers (non accelerated) are capable of delivering video overlay.

BTW: Why struggle with ATI in linux, linux drivers are fully supported by Nvidia, with regular updates. Even if you don`t play games, it really speeds up web browsing, scrolling and things such as flash. I know you love your ATI card, but it sure makes things easier when you have an Nvidia card. Just completed Max Payne 2 & Half Life 2

Single unified driver for all nvidia cards, just like in Windows.

Yep, I`m aware of the advanced background feature, and have seen the globe, it`s in configuredesktop/advanced options, really neat feature! you can change the frequency it updates (default is 10 minutes).

Could be possible to use this to display TV! thanks for the suuggestion.

It's not that i really like my ati card, it is just that i didn't realize that driver support was crap when i got it. Linux was stamped on the outside of the box as a supported OS. I just didn't realize that the linux drivers on the cd were identical to a regular radeon 9200!! I'm really beginning to lean toward nvidia. glad i got this thing for only $45 rom the value bin rather the the over $300 dollar value ati was claiming...

The other reason I got this is because it was the first video card i have purchased and i could not find any nvida manufactured cards. I have since learned they don't manufacture their own cards like ati but sell the chips to other manufactures that make the cards.

You may want to try googling for "video desktop in linux". I'm still diggin around, for you.

Thanks, appreciate you spending time on this

not found anything myself yet, the closest I found was the ability to display Windows winamp AVS animation as desktop background, so in theory it may be possible with TV in Linux.
