IBM TP T42 w Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG: can't set up interface manually

i'm using an IBM TP T42 with an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG card on Slackware GNU/Linux 12.2. the dirvers are there and loaded. wpa_supplicant installed. everything is in place to work. i know this becuase i'm right now connected to the internet writing this post. yet, i'm using wicd (slackware alien). w/o wicd i'm unable to connect however and i can't figure it out why.

i edited both /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf and /etc/rc.d/rc.wireless.conf to no avail. i use the defualt settings right now which means that pretty much nothing is set. yet with wicd it works. i also tried setting up the parameters with iwconfig. yet, i get no response from the dhcp server.

my questions are:
1. where do i configure my wireless lan card (rc.inet1.conf or rc.wireless.conf or ??). i think rc.inet1.conf precedes over rc.wireless.conf but i'm not sure.
2. how do i make clear that i'm using wpa2/tkip with a wpapsk? in rc.inet1.conf there are at least two possibilies:
Code:
WLAN_KEY[x]="<key>"
WLAN_IWPRIV[x]="set AuthMode=WPAPSK | set EncrypType=TKIP | set WPAPSK=<key>"
in rc.wireless.conf there's again at least two possibilities:
Code:
KEY=<key> //or
IWPRIV=<parameters>
do i have to set IWPRIV? what are the parameters, the same as in rc.inet1.conf?
3. how do i find out the HWADDR of my access point?
4. my access point is also my dhcp server. is it enough to say in rc.inet1.conf e.g.:
Code:
DHCP_IPADDR[x]=<ip>
5. how do i find out the channel?
adn finally the most important question:
6. if everything is set up correctly what do i do? use dhcpcd to get an ip? i hate wireless . it's voodoooooooo

thanks :::

a little add on:
- i'm using wpa instead of wpa2
- i know i can find the mac addresse if i configure the router through my browser. yet, wicd does know the mac of the access point as well and i don't think it needs a browser to do that. how then does it fing out?

cheers :::
