essid cannot be set in Managed but can in Ad-hoc

Hello,

I am running mandrake 10 community, my pcmcia card is a mn 720 (802.11g) broadcom chipset, i got it up and identified using ndiswrapper and the windows driver. However i cannot set up the connection to my access point belking (802.11b) the problem i am having is that i cannot change my ESSID, or bit rate, using iwconfig or altering the wireless.opts file when in Managed mode. The intriguing thing is that it works if i set the mode to Ad-Hoc, where i can change the bit rate, essid and all the other parameters.

does anyone have an idea of what can be happening to my configuration ? Thank you for the help

If you do, even if you are not sure, please post. I heard of similar cases on a sourceforge faq but no help.

Thanks

in Ad-hoc the card is fully functional

i forgot to mention that when i set the mode to Ad-hoc the card is fully functional, it recognizes the acess point, can scan using iwlist but it just can't get an ip because it is not running the managed mode.

post your wireless parameters that you have set in your config files?

It may be simpler to set the wireless settings in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-<interface name>

I think problem may be with wireless.opts settings or the driver. Best to go over wireless parameters first.

wireless files

I tried many configurations, and even if the files were configured right i'm assuming that my essid would not change, because whenever i am under managed mode i cannot change it thru:

iwconfig wlan0 essid MYESSID

under managed mode or even combinations of input

e.g.

iwconfig wlan0 mode managed essid MYESSID

iwconfig wlan0 essid MYESSID mode managed

or turning key on and off, seting it on the acesspoint or not at home, usually i don't use key on the campus network, where i tried a couple times also.

i can however change it when i am under Ad-hoc mode, but not under Managed.

ifcfg-wlan0 tryied changing a lot, last configuration is the plain one

DEVICE=wlan0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
ONBOOT=no
MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes

wireless.opts the last time after twinkling pretty much the same, changes only a new card scheme

# Wireless LAN adapter configuration
#
# Theory of operation :
#
# The script attempts to match a block of settings to the specific wireless
# card inserted, the *first* block matching the card is used.
# The address format is "scheme,socket,instance,hwaddr", with * as a wildcard.
# 'scheme' is the pcmcia scheme (set via 'cardctl scheme XXX').
# 'hwaddr' is the unique MAC address identifier of the wireless card.
# The MAC address is usually printed on the card, or can be found via ifconfig.
# Some examples here use only half of the MAC address with a wildcard to
# match a whole family of cards...
#
# All the Wireless specific configuration is done through the Wireless
# Extensions, so we will just call 'iwconfig' with the right parameters
# defined below.
# Of course, you need to have iwconfig installled on your system.
# To download iwconfig, or for more info on Wireless Extensions :
# http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_...nux/Tools.html
#
# Note : you don't need to fill all parameters, leave them blank, in most
# cases the driver will initialise itself with sane defaults values or
# automatically figure out the value... And no drivers do support all
# possible settings...
#
# If you make any mistakes, you'll get a cryptic message in the system
# log. You'll need to figure out on your own which parameter was wrong:
# cardmgr[310]: executing: './network start wvlan0'
# cardmgr[310]: + SIOCSIWMODE: Invalid argument
# I've tried to give more troubleshooting help at :
# http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_...ols.html#debug
# In case of doubts, just check "/etc/pcmcia/wireless" for the gory details...
#
# Note also that this script will work only with the original Pcmcia scripts,
# and not with the default Red Hat scripts. Send a bug report to Red Hat ;-)
#
# Finally, send comments and flames to me, Jean Tourrilhes <jt@hpl.hp.com>

Should have onBoot=yes
can remove MII line
also add entries for
GATEWAY
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
BROADCAST
MODE=Managed
CHANNEL
ESSID
KEY='restricted [1] XXXXXXXXXX'

GATEWAY is IP address of gateway/router machine on the same network.
BROADCAST is first 3 digits of network address with the last digit being 255.

look at /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-wireless for example of wireless parameters that can be set in ifcfg-wlan0

I have seen some success with http://www.linuxant.com on Mandrake 10
using generic driverloader rpm and with the kernel-source installed.

put another 20 and i get a new wireless card.... i was just wondering... in case this one doesn't work in a closer update of the loader, which traditional cards work good with linux ?

from d-link ? lynksys ? I know orinoco does.... but i have never seen it on a regular electronic store.... I 'm almost ordering one from newegg though..... but what is the deal with the new proxim's orinoco, is it still the same supported chipset ?

that is what i was using..... =)

thanks for the help though..... it's a shame i can't get it going..... i just don't understand why i cannot change the essid under managed mode
it works in ad-hoc, i find my accesspoint and all.....

do you know of anything that would connect in ad-hoc mode to an access point running infrastructure/managed mode ?

i even tried tweaking a copy of the .inf file.... but no luck....

i guess it's just sit and wait now...
=(

did you get any errors trying to set essid in command line or system logs?

If you want to email me output (/root/strace.out)
strace -f -o /root/strace.out iwconfig wlan0 essid MYESSID

I could look at that and maybe see if anything jumps out.
