what is /etc/hotplug/blacklist for?

i'm guessing it's for all the stuff that you dont want hotplug to automatically load or try to load but i have a more specific question:

when i couldnt get alsamixer to work(it kept saying "no mixer elems found") i added a sound driver that i dont think i use, it doesnt show up in lsmod(snd-intel8x0m) and things worked. why?

The blacklist prevents hotplug from probing for certain drivers. Occasionally, a driver may match hardware that it's not really for, and thus hotplug will load the wrong driver, breaking things. The blacklist keeps hotplug from attempting to load that driver.
