what's the best way to import Firefox bookmarks to Pale Moon?

I've been interested in trying the Pale Moon browser, but last time I read up on Pale Moon, there was no way to import bookmarks but manually--the importing tool didn't work anymore. Has anyone figured out a better solution than remaking all their bookmarks one-by-one?

Firefox Environment Backup Extension? Thank you. Trying it.

I had already just found out that I need only make the Firefox bookmarks into HTML, but I guess I need the FEBE to save the cookies and other information.

Ah, I had assumed that you had a problem importing the .html bookmarks file, hence the thread. Good to know that you'll at least get your bookmarks across. Let us know how you get on and to what extent FEBE can migrate your settings across!

Never needed bookmarks from one browser to "try out" another.
Try STFW for RTFM

why is this marked solved?
anyhow, on MY palemoon, it asks me if i want to import them from firefox (but only if it finds a ~/.mozilla/firefox folder).
i can access that function later through Bookmarks => Organize Bookmarks => Import and Backup => Import data from another browser

Because Hydrurga told me how to solve the problem. I admit I did mark it solved prematurely, because I expected the solution to work, but am I'm not finished testing it. I have backed up, but have not successfully imported the backup in Pale Moon yet. I'll unmark the thread.

Well, backing up everything in FEBE was very easy. But in Palemoon, accepting those backups is the problem. Apparently you can install FEBE in Pale Moon as well; I found it in the add-on list in Pale Moon but didn't assume it would work. FEBE also restores backups, of course, so I tried to "restore" the Firefox backups--so far just the cookies. It didn't work--FEBE keeps saying the file is not a valid backup. I suppose that's probably because Pale Moon won't take a Firefox file. I'll fool around some more--lots of options in FEBE and I haven't examined them all. I realize "restore" isn't the same as "import."

Yeah, that was the problem: Pale Moon successfully backs up its own information with FEBE, but will not accept backups from Firefox. I jumped to the conclusion Hydrurga had tried this solution already and knew it would work.

partial solution

I discovered that all I had to do was copy the Firefox profile folder (you know, the one named in random alphanumeric characters) to the Pale Moon folder (with Pale Moon closed, of course). That was obvious, but I didn't try it because I hadn't thought it would work.

However, for no obvious reason, that failed to import the bookmarks now. Bizarre--first I could get only the Firefox bookmarks, now I can get everything but the bookmarks. When I try to import the HTML, I get no error message, just nothing. A JSON doesn't work either.

I tried to work around this by returning to the original Pale Moon profile (deleting the profile I copied from .mozilla), saving a new bookmark HTML from Pale Moon (since it had the Firefox bookmarks before refusing to accept the HTML again), re-copying the Firefox profile, and lastly trying to import the bookmarks HTML. It didn't work. So, I give up trying to import all the information together. I can get the bookmarks or everything except the bookmarks into Pale Moon, but not both. I'm considering which set of information I want to save more, but I know that will be the bookmarks.

Ah no, hence the "?" in my original comment about FEBE.

Sorry to hear that you've been having problems.

You can't be the only one to have wanted to do this though. Have you tried posting your problem in the Pale Moon forum?

am i missing something here? i'm confused.

i posted the solution how to import settings, incl. the complete bookmark structure, from firefox into palemoon in post #6.
iirc, you can tell palemoon what to import, i.e. only bookmarks is possible.

i see now that in your op you wrote "the importing tool didn't work anymore", so it's
either:
1) tell us more about that. have you tried with a fresh palemoon folder? has firefox have its .mozilla folder in the same user's $HOME?
or:
2) even if it really fails, you can still a) export to html from firefox, b) import from html in palemoon - a few drag'n'drop operations from the library window will fix the bookmark toolbar etc.

Tried it. Importing HTML should work, but doesn't. Pale Moon will not take an HTML that was made in Firefox. It doesn't make sense to me either.

Export firefox bookmark in a file (default bookmarks.html) and restoring it into palemoon should work.
You can also copy the file places.sqlite from your firefox folder to your palemoon folder
Of course you should do it while palemoon is stopped

well that shouldn't happen.
maybe your palemoon is borked?
have you searched palemoon forums for hints?

troubleshoot:
open a terminal, enter 'palemoon'.
reproduce the error.
look at the terminal output, and post it here.
