I have a laptop running SUSE and when I try to play a DVD I get an error. I tried downloading Kaffeine but I am unable to get the DVD to play. Is there a better DVD player? Or am I missing something?
Here's a good link that lists the major third party repositories. If you do not know how to install them, take a look here. This site is also handy for instructions on getting Xine installed and other multimedia issues. I have my SuSE 10.0 up and running. Hope this helps.
I have followed the instructions from the various site and I am unable to get the DVD player to install correctly. I get the tar file unzipped and it creates the directory and I am unable to get the software to install. I am not sure what else to do so I am thinking about giving up
The packages from the sites I linked to are rpms and not tarballs. Did you try to install them so that they replace your current version of kaffeine and xine libs (which are crippled).
full article on howto get every aspect working thats been deliveratly broken by Suse for legal reasons!
note: make sure you enable your cd / dvd source if you get errors asking for cds on installing some of the packages!(u will know what i mean if it happens !! )

why dont people just download the EVAL version and not the open version. All these problems are because in the open version suse only allows 100% FOSS. The EVAL version has no time limits or restrictions other than a licence agreement needed for the licenced software.

oh really? i was under the impression the eval version was limited in some way thats the only reason i use open suse none-eval!!
you may want to delete "kernel of the day" from that list, daily kernel builds almost guaranteed to break your system. you can delete 'security-prpm' as well if you will still be using online update.
save the file.
at the command line enter ' sux - ' , then enter roots password.
then enter:
' apt update' (checks the repositories for new files, they're all new at this point)
'apt install rpmkey*'( gets the developers gpg keys )
' apt install apt ' may or may not update apt and apt libs.
'apt install synaptic' installs a nice GUI for package management.
i use yast online update for security and bug fixes and apt for everything else. that list changes frequently, so if after some time you start getting dependency errors, check the suse 10 component list at the first link i gave you.
