Moving old Thunderbird to new Installation?

Like many I wanted to try many different flavors before I settled on a distribution of Linux. I have finally settled and now I need to get all my e-mail for the last 6 moths settled into a single mail file. In all distros I used Thunderbird 1.0.2 and that is what I am using today. The problem is I need to move all my mail files (which I backup each time) to a single mail file.

Mozilla states: "If you want to transfer a mail file to another Mozilla profile or another installation of Mozilla, simply put the mail file into the other installation's Mail folder." I hate to say it but they are WRONG. When I do this I get BLANK folders with no messages. Obviously I had to rename the folders first as to not overwrite my existing messages in corresponding folders. I did this by means of Inbox_1, Sent Items_1, etc. and all folders contain no messages. SO I tried to move the .msf files also, and to no avail, the folders are still empty.

When I launch the individual thunderbird clients, all the mail is there ... but of course it cannot be exported as there is no export function in Thunderbird.

I am just looking for a lil mail file consolidation and any help or suggestion would be welcome.

Regards

"If you see empty mail folders after moving your profile from one location to another, remember to edit "prefs.js". It has absolute paths to your old profile. Replace those with the path to your new profile location as described in steps 3-5 on this page."

Thanks for the info! Does this still apply if only want to move messages? I have an existing profile on the new box, but I also have 4 old profiles from other flavors and one from windows xp.

I would still love to get this done if anyone is in possession of the knowledge. Thanks!
