How to download patch packages to a local drive first, then patch the system

Hi,

I have a simple question about RHEL patching: How can I download patch packages to a local drive first, then patch the system by applying the downloaded packages? The patch tools I want to use are yum for RHEL5 and up2date for RHEL4.

Thank you in advance!

I know your question specifies Red Hat(tm) distros.

For those in the Debian, Ubuntu, Mint world, apt-get has the command line
option --download-only that fetches package files identified by other
command options. In addition, there is the command apt-get download
that only does the fetch modified by other options.

NOTE -- You might also want to use apt-get check to sort out
package dependencies before using downloaded packages.

Packages fetched using either of these approaches enter the apt cache and
will be applied during the next apt-get upgrade.

Good luck,
~~~ 0;-Dan
you ARE paying RHEL a boatload of cash for the EXTENDED -EXTRA support for RHEL4
and you are also paying red hat for the normal support for RHEL5
have you asked red hat ? seeing as you ARE paying them for the support
it is called creating a "local" repo
and it is fully documented in the red hat knowledge base
https://access.redhat.com/search/quick?
--- you will have to log in to red hat site first
Firstly you need the downloadonly plugin
yum install yum-downloadonly
Then download updates
yum -y update --downloadonly
packages will be downloaded to /var/cache/yum but this can be changed using the --downloaddir= option
