Files dragged/dropped from DVD to samba share get nobody:nobody & wrong mask

Files dragged/dropped from DVD to samba share get nobody:nobody & wrong mask
Just found an odd one. When we drag/drop files into a samba share from our machines they get the correct permissions, but if we do the same directly from a DVD into the folder, it gets nobody:nobody and doesn't get the create mask specified for that share.
There is a difference if the files are put into the folder mounted with cifs/samba, with the smb.conf share rules applying,
or otherwise, "directly from a DVD into a folder" without using Samba and smb.conf at all.
