Error installing Ark game server files - "Missing file permissions"

I'm trying to set up an Ark server for me and a friend to play on an old PC I put Debian 12 on. I installed steamcmd, set the install directory to /home/steam/servers/ark, and logged in anonymously. However, when I tried to download the server files using "app_update 376030 validate", it just returns "ERROR! Failed to install app '376030' (Missing file permissions)". New to linux, so I'm using the wiki's guide to setting up dedicated servers and this steam post. Thanks!

Talking Fixed the issue!!

I don't know exactly what fixed it because I just threw a few things at it and it worked. I opened a new tab in the terminal and this time logged into root with su, opened steamcmd again and changed the install directory to ./ark_server/ instead. Did this and reran the commands, and this time it worked.
