Can I use rsync to create mirror two servers with different OS

I am currently doing an internship at a local high school and i ran into a problem i thought i would pose to you. They currently are running half the school district on mac and the other on pc. the problem is that the pcs are set up with a novell server and the macs with an os x server so if a teacher saves work to one and then switches to another they no longer have access to it. I had looked into software to put both system on novell but the school district doesnt have the budget for programs like kanaka or prosoft and they lack the time to work with ldap. Im looking into a way to mirror the two servers and i was wondering if rsync would work or if the file systems were so different it would be more of a pain in the ass then its worth. Thanks in advance

rsync can be installed in mac os, windows and novell (not in the oldest version. read here). Looks like it can be done technically. See how can you match that with your requirements.

Is there some way to share data between the servers/networks rather than mirroring? I don't quite follow the reference to ldap though

When i mentioned LDAP i meant that we dont have the time to configure the OS X machines to work with e-directory so they would just authenticate through novell
