LinuxQuestions.org Turns 8

It was eight years ago today that I made the very first post introducing LQ to the world. I'm truly amazed how far the site has come since then. Almost 3,200,000 posts and over 350,000 registered members doesn't even begin to tell the tale, though. Despite our size we remain friendly and the core goals I had in mind when I started the site still remain to this day. In the end, the most important thing remains - and that's you. I'd like to thank each and every LQ member for their participation, dedication and feedback. That feedback has been absolutely critical to our success and growth. With that spirit in mind, I'd like to use this thread to collect as much feedback as possible about LQ. What are we doing well and where can we improve? What new features or sections would you like to see? What should we be doing differently? We have a fairly major code upgrade coming in the mid-term future, so now is a great time for feature requests. Let us know your thoughts, we really are listening. As a thank you, I'll be randomly selecting 10 suggestions from this thread and upgrading the posting member to a contributing member for one year.

Happy Birthday LQ,
Happy Birthday LQ,
Can't wait to be a Guru,
Happy Birthday to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cichlid 06-25-2008 11:32 AM

I have been with LQ for a number for years now and can not express just how much of a resource LQ has bene to me. The moderators are great and the collective knowledge of the membership is very impressive. LQ remains one of my first stops to problem solving and learning linux.
Thanks and good job Jeremy.

shankariyer 06-25-2008 12:51 PM

Godspeed

Happy B'day LQ ! Thanks for being there and all the help!
Great job Jeremy!

ciden 06-25-2008 01:06 PM

LQ is great !!!
And Happy Birthday !!

As far as suggestions are concerned, this is one of the neatest forums
I have visited. No Ads get in your way (Plz dont take that as a reason to
add more ads !) and whats more, it is very much readable even when using a
text only browser (I used w3m) I was amazed. Thats a rare trait nowadays.

Cheers!

ncsuapex 06-25-2008 01:09 PM

LQ has been by FAR the most helpful linux forum I have posted on. Thanks to everyone who volunteers to help those in need.

jeremy 06-25-2008 01:58 PM

Thanks for the feedback so far. We certainly have no plans to add any additional advertisements for logged in members. You'll actually see less and less to the point where you see almost none. We do try to make sure the site degrades gracefully in all browsers, and will continue to do so as much as possible.

A very HAPPY B'DAY to LQ. Its been a privilege to be here and learn so much from the gurus and the senior members and contribute to the posts and share the knowledge with the new comers to Linux fraternity.
LQ in every sense has been and is complete in regards to every aspect of Linux.
Be it forums, news, or any other related tasks.
Even the first timer here has no problems what-so-ever finding or searching the related posts or starting threads with respect to the relevance of the forum. The forums are really neatly arranged with almost all the topics covered under respective sub forums.
The best part of the LQ is the members that it has got. The senior members, gurus have really shown the way to the newbies and noobs.

That is the way to go..................
Thanks to Jeremy for bringing this LQ to this world.
Lets make this world a more happy place and more open......a LINUX place

How about a separate "Flamewars Forum", Jeremy? Somewhere that members who are so inclined can rip to shreds other members' preferences in OS's, distros, editors, whatever. No holds barred. It would help to keep the other forums on an even keel.

Hey! This was my idea.!!!

Anyway, get to work on it Jeremy . . .

These old men don't seem ashamed of stealing candy(ideas) from little kids . . .

LQ is great! A feature I would love to see is a "My Posts" section in the Quick Links menu. I've seen that on other forums and use it frequently. If there is already a similar feature, please let me know how to use it.

Edit:
I've answered my own "question" by looking again, and I feel pretty foolish. I've used LQ for a few years now, but never found that feature until now. I guess I expected it it different places based on my experience with other forums. The "My Posts" feature is on the My LQ navigation. However, it is below the ads and well out of view, even on a relatively high 1280 x 1024 resolution. Perhaps still adding it to the Quick Links menu can improve usability.

Unique feature of LQ is I think the determination of senior members and anyone with relevant knowledge to make sure problems get resolved- opensource would never have developed without it. Thank you.

alan_ri 06-26-2008 12:34 PM

Happy birthday LQ!
Congratulations on everything that this awasome community has done to help Linux see the world and the world to see Linux and for all the help that new Linux users can find here, just like all the others.
LQ is more than fun, more than knowlege and more than help.LQ is a spirit.Special spirit that is making the world a better place!
Jeremy, there's just two things that I would like to see here in the future which I miss now and those are sub-forums for desktop environments, window managers(with sections for maybe just a few most used like KDE,Gnome,Xfce,Fluxbox,Compiz(fusion) or for how much it would be possible) and X window system(X.org server) under the Linux-Desktop forum because I belive that then Linux-Desktop forum would be better organized and easier for finding what someone is looking for and as somebody already mentioned and suggested a sub-forum for multimedia.I think we need that forum because it really is a specific subject and I belive that it deserves a sub-forum now when Linux multimedia is becoming much better in every aspect.
All the best! :)

Sorry guys, this won't happen. The closest you'll get is that a mod will mock you soundly and then close your thread preventing you from answering back. It's really the best of both worlds. ;)

LQ has never been flame war friendly - the aim has always been to create and nurture a community here and flame wars really don't help with that. We're just too international here and a mild ribbing doesn't always come across in the way it's intended. Add to which, text is a terrible way to express yourself correctly. The words "you are an idiot" are just so much starker on screen than if spoken out loud.

Happy birthday to us. And while the Jeremy and the mod team here are absolutely fantastic and need their pay doubling or trebling, the members make us what we are. So everyone should now pat themself on the back and congraulate themself on a job well done.

brianL 06-26-2008 03:21 PM

With a separate Flame War Forum, if anything untoward kicked off in any other forum, then one of our highly esteemed Moderators could post: "Moved to the Flame War forum, where it will get the attention it deserves".

Cuetzpallin 06-26-2008 03:34 PM

Happy Birthday LQ.

I'm new here but not in linux, and I was learning a lot of things and some times help someone, contributing with knowledge and questions.

My best wishes to all people make LQ the place to find not only answers but friends.

Maybe a new face for this 8th birthday will be nice.

Regards :D

Yes, we could do that. But I certainly didn't become a mod so I could be even handed and fair! This year, I will mostly be massively abusing my power :)

But seriously folks, we don't like flame wars on LQ. While they are fun at first, they do get out of hand and you wind up losing people who either can't take a joke or simply get offended. And on a practical note, how on earth do you successfully moderate a flame war??

phantom_cyph 06-27-2008 12:10 AM

Any chance we'll get a new color scheme or slightly different layout because of the birthday?

And XavierP, kudos to you for how you do handle the flamewars ;)

I rather like the present colour scheme - easy on the eye. What would you suggest?

Yes, if we had a Moderator Of the Year Poll, he'd get my vote. It's a difficult task when there's people like me to deal with. :)

jeremy 06-27-2008 08:54 AM

We have no plans to change the color scheme, but a code upgrade is in the mid-term plans. No major redesign is planned as part of that, but there will be some minor changes.

ciden 06-28-2008 05:48 AM

A real suggestion, can we get to have animated avatars?

Plz, Plsss, Please, PLEASE !!!

XavierP 06-28-2008 08:39 AM

Yay for the avatar discussion! :) It is a long standing, set in concrete, never gonna change nu-uh policy on LQ not to have avatars at all. They aren't enabled because they have a tendency to become unprofessional and LQ always aims to present a professional face to the internetwebspherethingy.

brianL 06-28-2008 09:10 AM

No NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to Avatars!!! NO * 2^30 to animated avatars. Don't want to lower the tone of the site with such adolescent eye-candy.
:tisk: :D

Bill

ciden 06-28-2008 11:53 PM

Ok, no animated avatars.

What about 48*48 16-color icons?

Puhleez. . . .

I desperately want a li'l puppy-dog for my avatar. . .

Funny. I still can't see it. All i see is the subscribed threads. That was going to be my suggestion as well anyway. I always have to go to search>advanced>search by username>themanwhowas. A little long winded for me.

On another note, after going to the tutorial section and selecting a sub heading, networking for example, it's a bit of a free for all. Alphabetical order would be ok if there was some consistency to the titles of the tutorials. I suppose if you are looking for something specific you can use the search feature but if you're just browsing it's a bit of a mess.

XavierP 06-29-2008 06:23 AM

The "My Posts" link works fine for me. Can you post a link to a screenshot to show us what you're seeing or not seeing. Jeremy is also working on some changes to the articles and tutorials section that may address that.

Incidentally, looking at the bottom of the page, I see the following:

Since Jeremy has stated categorically that there will never be Avatars, I guess he will need to modify the offer to "randomly" select 10 suggestions.....;)

brianL 06-29-2008 09:41 AM

I may be biassed (who me? never!), but I think the Flame Wars Forum is the best idea yet. All those in favour, raise your hands...right...one...

ciden 06-29-2008 09:51 AM

Why be against avatars?

Some guys here have horribly ugly 'unprofessional' looking sigs.

Damn, someone even had a scrollful of Slackware related useless links in his sig.

XavierP 06-29-2008 12:17 PM

And yes, BrianL, one :)
