I had that error. Having never installed KDE before, I didn't know where to start. I
first tried KDE 3.2 but after much head banging I resorted to KDE 3.1.4.

Good reference, but you'll have to snoop around to see which one will help you.
Doesn't seems that any KDE 3.2 is under /stable
Where are you getting your source? Do they not provide a compatible QT as well?
I think that was the ultimate 'trick' to get all of the versions KDE, QT and aRts
from the same source
At one point I also built a QT by hand. The build worked but I didn't end up using it.
My notes FYI:
Install the latest QT>
WARNING: /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so is threaded!
The Qt OpenGL module requires Qt to be configured with -thread.
Read the readme!
Set some environment variables in the file .profile (or .login,
depending on your shell) in your home directory. Create the
file if it is not there already.
QTDIR - the directory in which you're building Qt
PATH - to locate the moc program and other Qt tools
MANPATH - to access the Qt man pages
LD_LIBRARY_PATH - for the shared Qt library
# ./configure -thread
