Options besides menu.c32/vesamenu.c32??

Everytime I put a distro on USB that uses menu.c32/vesamenu.c32, including slax, when I try to boot it a white screen appears and asks for the "password".
Does anyone else experience this??
What are alternatives to menu.c32/vesamenu.c32?
I know of DSL/Puppy's "boot.msg" and a reg text menu, but there must be other options right?
Thanks.
