Post opening files in their programs

this is a quick one, and I'm sure very simple.

I love using command line and dislike using the mouse (I love the keyboard) in GNOME/KDE GUI.

When I cd into a specific directory and I want to open a .jpg file or a .doc file in their appropriate appliction, how do I do it?

It is really annoying to get into the directory and then remember that I don't know how to do it and I have to go back to GNOME.

I'm sure there must be a way....

thanks
Hamish
