Installing Slackware 9.1 on external hard drive?

I want to install Linux and see how I like it, and keep my Windows XP while I learn Linux. Should I install to my external hard drive, to avoid any "loss of XP" issues? If so, how do I go about that process? I put in the Slackware9.1 boot disc 1, but I honestly had no idea what I was looking at, so I rebooted without the disc into the relative comfort of XP. I decided to seek advice before going through with the install, as I am not too familiar with the way Linux creates and manages partitions.

Hi, and welcome to LQ!

To the best of my knowledge not even 10.2 will support USB and/
or firewire devices of the boot-disks... try to run it and check whether
it's being picked up. If it is you may have to create a special boot-
disk after install to be able to access it, unless the machine explicitly
supports booting of USB devices.
