With the risk of getting reprimanded, I think this is a bot. It's too suspicious for me. Short basic questions, testing the forum security maybe, etc.?

I think so too. Note that it never responds to replies.

Exactly, because if it had, it would easily give itself away.

Oh, my apologies, F,Dillon@NYC.

As a novice Linux user, please acknowledge that you're reading replies, and do engage with the people who respond to you.

Several of your threads have had respondents who asked for clarifications, for example. You should reply to them.

Your thread about which virtualization technology uses the most resources has gathered some particularly well thought-out responses, and you should follow up in that thread in particular.

Finally, please have a look at the top post in this thread, and see if it gives you any insight into how you can participate more productively here:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ty-4175547696/

To expand on the response you got in this thread: Linux has a command called "man". "man" followed by the name of a command brings up its "man page", or its "manual page". So entering "man ping" and the terminal will give you the manual page for ping.

Whether this is a bot or not, it very clearly illustrates the fact that mal-traffic of all types has converged so closely to certain types of real traffic as to be very difficult to distinguish from real. Of course, that is the object!

Just an aside...

I have spent most of the last 6 months dealing with a targeted attack on one of my own customer's sites (really not an area of expertise for me when it started!) and I have concluded that overall it is a battle already lost on today's internet.

And it will only get worse as the convergence is already asymptotic. The amount of effort required to detect, protect, adapt, etc. is already the major sink-hole of time and resources at the expense of creative content and ordinary uses. I no longer think primarily in terms of how to protect, which I now consider pointless overall. My focus now is how to leave it all behind and provide for functional requirements in different ways... suggestions to that end - maybe I should start a thread for the topic?

No, you're not dumb. It takes time to learn an entirely new operating system.

However, as dugan has mentioned, please take the time to respond to the folks who have attempted to help you and let them know where you're at and if don't understand something, don't hesitate to ask. If an issue is resolved, don't forget to mark your thread as "SOLVED" by clicking on "Thread Tools" right above your intial post.

Regards...

Sorry for the off topic response.

I would be interested to read what you have to write about this topic. The opinions and experiences others have regarding this subject would be very insightful as well. A thread about this would be very productive for me. Please link to it in this thread if you do happen to broach the subject in your own thread.

Here's a useful site for learning terminal commands:

http://linuxcommand.org/

There's a free book you can download, or even buy a "real" one.
