This is another test
At the grub menu, when you first boot, press c for a grub> prompt

Code:
set params=windows
insmod ntfs
ntldr (hd1,2)/bootmgr
boot
If it doesn't boot change the 2 to a 1 or 3 and try again

Code:
That installation ended up with windows on 2 disks sdb1 and sdb2
Did you reinstall windows for this to happen? Did you remove the windows drive to install ubuntu then reinstalled the windows drive?

What does this have to do with the bios? Don't you get a grub menu when you first turn on the system without going into the bios?

Did you try it with changing the 2 to a 1 or 3?]
try it without the set params line.

What happens when you use f2 to bios boot the windows drive?

You didn't happen to pull the windows drive out and not hook it up to the same connector when you plugged it back in?

AT the moment I'm running out of things to try,

It could be entertaining if it wasn't sad. Trying to fix a problem without identifying it first. Then, just to add to confusion, switching boot drives in BIOS, which causes drive enumeration to change and creates whole new hardware configuration. O'brother ...

Hi CP I have tried variations but im not sure which numbers to change of if both should be changed. the last time I added the symbol that grub keeps saying its missing 'c' so line 3 looked like this ntldr ('hd1, 2') no error that time but still boots to black screen. Anyway I need to organise it better with a print out to mark as done to keep proper track of where I am.
Right which numbers do I change then, do it line by line pressing enter after each line. do I then input the 4 lines again or just change the numbers please. the line creating the errors in ntldr etc.

I was running ubuntu 18.04LTS with windows 10 for about 3 years when I decided to upgrade. I installed ubuntu 20.04. all fine no boot repair required. Then the keyboard stopped working.I use "ubuntu something else" I partitioned the Kingston (ubuntu) drive but that was it. I ensure that I dont click on the windows drive in error so I dont know what happened. On booting up I immediately knew something was wrong as windows appeared on sdb1 and sdb2 and both opened and ran windows. ubuntu was booting from the CD drive.

anyway just let me know which numbers I am to change and I will get my self organised and do it tomorrow. I think we are on different time zones Im British
here are some of the errors quoted: bootmgr not found, cannot get C/H/S, Invalid file name bootmgr,

Again many thanks for your help. When I know for certain which numbers to change I will try again tomorrow. I know my inexperience makes it very difficult for you. The errors are all mine even worse when you dont know if I have made any or what errors they were. Dont worry if I have to re-install. Just advise which OS I expect it to be windows. Thanks

if did not work. no change. Yancek I would not have been able to even get on Linux Questions without the internet.
The questions was if you had internet on the computer in question.

The link I posted instructing how to download and run boot repair would not have required an update as it is kept updated and is always more current than what is available at other sites.

You're referring to sdb1 and sdb2 as though they are separate physical drives which they are not. They are simply partitions on the same drive and sdb2 appears to be the drive you need to access. Without detailed output from boot repair, we're just guessing.

Sorry I misunderstood Yes both my PC,s are wire connected to the same wifi. I understand that they are partitions on the same physical drive and on a separate HDD from Ubuntu's SDD. thank you for responding. The problem last time was the it never booted into the graphically screen which it normally does giving the opportunity to choose paste bin. When it eventually started up it went to sliding blue line indicating the areas being checked so I did not get an option to check a paste box I will try again. BTW I burnt a new Boot repair to ISO to create a new disk Trying now but will take a little time. Thanks for your input
