gcc: ./remote-@REMOTE@.c: No such file or directory gcc: no input files

I am running SuSE 9.1 on a desktop pc (AMD XP2000+).
I am currently trying to install a program from the tar.gz file. I have unpacked it and went to run make install and was told I had no make command.
I have downloaded make-3.80.tar.gz and found I needed a c compiler. Then downloaded and installed cpp-3.3.3-41.i586.rpm gcc-3.3.3-41.i586.rpm and glibc-devel-2.3.3-98.i586.rpm.
After this i have tried to run the compile script sh./build.sh (for the make command) but after a stack of compiling lines I get the following error:
compiling remote-@REMOTE@.c...
gcc: ./remote-@REMOTE@.c: No such file or directory
gcc: no input files
what is wrong? Is there an option I need to use with the build script? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

firstly ur supposed to run ./configure before make and secondly u should of just installed gcc via yast so it would resolve all dependencies for u.

Sorry I should have been more verbose.
I used ./congiure (thats how I found I needed the c compiler)
I installed the rpms through yast (It told me I needed binutils, glibc-devel & cpp, which I also installed through yast)
I don't know what the above error means - therefore I can't fix the problem!

I have downloaded the make rpm from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.1/suse/i586/
it installed and ran no worries.
I hope this helps if someone else has the same problem.

If anyone knows what the error means - it would be great to know B)
