why does my laptop pc have a eth0 and eth1 when i only have 1 network card?

IEEE 1394 is also known as firewire. For some reason you have networking turned on on your firewire port. Just go into networking tools (depending on distribution) and turn off networking on that interface.

eth1394 is the module that allows for Ethernet over FireWire networking, which is really awesome/fast (much more so than 'proper' Ethernet). If you don't use it, don't mind it much, it doesn't hurt.
PS: I used my Linux box as router with it, since I only had one ethernet card:
Internet <->(ethernet)<-> Linux box <->(eth1394)<-> Win box
