Open a terminal and enter:
dmesg|grep ^eth

This will tell you the devices which are being assigned to eth0 and eth1. We're looking for lines that are similar to this:
Quote:
eth0: Tigon3 [partno(BCM5752KFBG) rev 6002 PHY(5752)] (PCI Express) 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet 00:19:b9:21:2a:f6

hi, dmesg|grep ^eth gives this:
eth0:RealTek RTL8139 at 0xe000. 00:f0:01:99:e4, IRQ 9
eth0: Identified 8139 chip type 'RTL-8139C'
eth1394: eth0: IEEE-1394 IPv4 over 1394 Ethernet (fw-host0)
eth1: link down

- get the picture? i dont understand what eth1 is or why wit is there.

You could also try lspci for clues.
If you don't find it, don't worry about it (As long as your system is working OK)

IEEE 1394 is also known as firewire. For some reason you have networking turned on on your firewire port. Just go into networking tools (depending on distribution) and turn off networking on that interface.

eth1394 is the module that allows for Ethernet over FireWire networking, which is really awesome/fast (much more so than 'proper' Ethernet). If you don't use it, don't mind it much, it doesn't hurt.

PS: I used my Linux box as router with it, since I only had one ethernet card:
Internet <->(ethernet)<-> Linux box <->(eth1394)<-> Win box

Blacklist the suggested module.. eth1394 and that network interface will go away.
