Persistent pppd

Hi experts!

I'm working on a linux-based device connected to a serial GPRS modem. The system gets connection with pppd without problems if it's under GPRS coverage. The problem comes when it tries to start pppd out of coverage. Then, pppd can't connect and it exits.

How can I configure my ppp scripts to retry the connection periodically?

My system works with these scripts:

pppd_launch -> runs pppd with a bunch of options
ppp-chat-script
pppd_close

I've read somewhere that adding "persist" into /etc/ppp/options could do the trick. Would this option make pppd to restart if it exits? Would it restart with the same config/options that it did during the first attempt?

Thanks,

Daniel

I've not used this option, but according to the pppd man page, the option (as I understand it) causes pppd to not exit when the connection terminates, but to attempt to reestablish the connection.

Quote:
persist: Do not exit after a connection is terminated; instead try to reopen the connection.

However, if it can't reestablish because you are out of range, I am not sure what would happen. Probably depends on other options. But you might end up putting pppd into a fairly tight loop, or it might exit with an error.
