Network card installation (i hate linksys)

I'm ALMOST a complete noob, and i've got problems (figuratively). I just installed Winlinux 2001 on a Windows 98 system. All is fine (love that tron game) except I can't get my network card to work. I've got a Network Anywhere Linksys Fast Ethernet 10/100 NIC (version 4.1), and on the box it says it is compatable with Linux. When I cold boot linux, the eth0 initialization fails. I did "lspci" and found that the only thing close to a NIC was "Ethernet Controller: Bridgecom, Inc: Unknown Device 0985 (rev 11)". So apparently my system doesn't realize i have a network card. My /etc/modules.conf file WAS completely blank, but i added the line "alias eth0 tulip". The disk that came with the card has the tulip driver, along with other linux stuff. I don't know how to compile/install it though. I tried the command "gcc -DMODULE -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -c tulip.c" but there were errors. So how do i get this running? Any help is deeply appreciated (please be as specific as possible)

I have not used the drivers on the disk for quite a while since the card is supported in the kernel. Some distros may require you to build it or you may want/need to do a kernel recompile. Both ways require the kernel source tree.

posting the errors might help.

DavidPhillips is correct in the fact that the tulip driver has been a built-in kernel module for ages; you should not have to compile an external module.

Step #1 when your card (or its chipset) doesn't even show up correctly in the output of "lspci": turn off Plug-and-Play support in your BIOS. If the card/chipset is not correctly reported in the output of "lspci", you have a conflict on a much lower level than the driver/module. If you haven't disabled PNP support in your BIOS, do it now, restart your sytem, and let us know if anything changed.
